Grants of up to £50k available for community projects that tackle climate change
Community groups who want to tackle the escalating threat of climate change are invited to bid for funds of up to £50,000 to support their local green projects.
Haringey Council has launched the second wave of its major £300,000 fund to support community-led sustainability projects in the borough.
The council declared a climate emergency in 2019 with the bold ambition to become a net-zero borough by 2041.
The four-year Community Carbon Fund is welcoming applications for funding from this year’s £70,000 pot to start or expand decarbonisation projects.
Grants are available to community groups and organisations. Applications with the creativity, enthusiasm and knowledge to deliver carbon reduction for the wider community are particularly welcome.
Cllr Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport said:
With each passing year the climate emergency becomes increasingly urgent. We are determined to meet this challenge with a far-reaching, ambitious and transformational programme.
We are equally committed to doing this in partnership with Haringey residents. So, I’m delighted we are launching the second round of this important and ambitious fund. It provides a fantastic opportunity to unlock the talents and creativity of our communities so that together we can tackle the climate crisis and help ensure a fair and sustainable future for our borough. Apply now and help us make Haringey net zero carbon.
Our planning policies for new buildings set high sustainability standards and our teams work hard and are successful at achieving net zero developments. Where developers prove they cannot meet the necessary standards on site they must make a ‘carbon offset’ payment, which helps fund off site projects, such as the Community Carbon Fund.
In November, the council launched the Haringey Deal, which sets out a commitment to tap into the strengths, knowledge, expertise and passion of Haringey’s people to tackle the big challenges we face, including climate change.
Funding has previously helped community groups add solar panels and double glazing for their café; build a well-insulated, eco-friendly community hub; set up a repair café to fix faulty goods and reduce waste; and install LED lightbulbs across homes in Northumberland Park.
Applications for this round of funding can be submitted online or emailed to carbonmanagementteam@haringey.gov.uk before midnight on Friday 6 January 2023.
