Information on conference organisation and speakers

  • Blenheim/Insight Platform (external link) - Blenheim, part of Humankind, is an established national charity that provides support to drug and alcohol users, their family and carers. Last year we supported 28,185 individuals to make lasting changes to their lives. Insight Platform is one of our young people’s services, located in the heart of Tottenham, providing support to children, young people and families who are living with or are affected by drug or alcohol misuse in the London Borough of Haringey.
  • Adfam (external link) - Adfam is the only national UK charity working to improve support for those affected by someone else's substance use. Adfam does this through three key strands of work: empower family members and carers, support frontline workers and influence decision-makers to shape the environment for making decisions.
  • Anchor Approach - Haringey’s Anchor Approach is an early intervention programme that uses attachment and trauma theory to inform practice and support the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children. The project supports both universal service delivery and targeted work with children at risk.
  • Dr Ruth McGovern is an NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer in Public Health Research at the University of Newcastle. She specialises in in the dynamics between families and substance misuse. Her work aims at improving health and social needs through the reduction of lifestyle risk and promotion of social justice. She has a professional background in social work and counselling with a specialisation in drug and alcohol treatment which allows her to connect evidence-based observations and scientific research. During her presentation, Dr McGovern exposed in which ways children can be impacted by their parental alcohol use.
  • Department of Works and Pension, Reducing Parental Conflict Programme - The Department for Work and Pensions has worked with the Early Intervention Foundation to understand the impact that frequent, intense and poorly resolved conflict has on children and young people. The evidence is compelling and the Government has acted to support a £39 million programme that is seeking ways to work with families so that conflict is reduced and children lives are better. The programme is working with local authorities to train practitioners and test interventions. The significance of alcohol consumption and conflict in a household means that the programme is part of the innovation fund. For more information, visit the Reducing Parental Conflict Hub website (external link).
