Tri-borough appeal - Turkey/Syria earthquakes

Publication date:
February 10, 2023

Message from Cllr Peray Ahmet (Leader of Haringey Council), Cllr Nesil Caliskan (Leader of Enfield Council) and Philip Granville (Mayor of Hackney) on the Turkey/Syria earthquake appeal

Having spoken to our local communities with links to the earthquake areas in Turkey and Syria, we as leaders from Haringey, Enfield and Hackney want to urge residents NOT to donate any more goods including blankets and clothes to the relief effort.

This is because we are concerned about considerable logistical issues being created, and worries that donations are not getting to the areas they’re intended for.

Instead we are suggesting financial donations, big or small, should be sent through these international organisations:

  • Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) – are coordinating a range of UK charities’ aid efforts through an appeal for emergency relief efforts, including the British Red Cross.
  • Please visit the DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal webpage (external website) if you wish to donate.
