Haringey celebrates International Women’s Day

Publication date:
March 8, 2023

Events took place across Haringey on Wednesday 8 March to celebrate the contribution that women make in our communities and society as the borough marked International Women’s Day.

The day started with an event organised by our Women’s Staff Network, where Leader of the Council Cllr Peray Ahmet spoke alongside guest speaker Dr Gifty Edila, author of Defying Expectations: the Extraordinary Journey of a Black Woman Lawyer.

Cllr Ahmet talked about her pride at leading a majority female cabinet and at being the first woman of colour to lead the council – but also said “it’s important to be the first, but also not to be the last”, highlighting why it’s essential that we continue to support women into positions of leadership.

The day continued with visits by Cllr Ahmet to female-led businesses at Kingfisher House in Wood Green, and to speak to pupils at the Haringey Learning Partnership.

A range of other events took place across Haringey to mark the day, including storytelling and discussion groups in Haringey libraries, and a walking tour from Bruce Castle museum.

A broader programme of events and activities is taking place throughout March to learn about and celebrate inspirational women from past and present during Women’s History Month. Find out more on Haringey Council’s website: https://www.haringey.gov.uk/whm
