Walk with Pride - nature and wellbeing walk for LGBTQIA+ residents and allies

  • Saturday 20 August, 11am to 12.30pm

Join Juliet and Karen from Reach and Connect, for a nature and wellbeing walk as we bring together LGBTQIA+ residents and allies to explore one of Haringey’s beautiful green spaces.

We’ll start at the wonderfully welcoming community space and café, Living Under One Sun, before wandering leisurely through Down Lane Park and across to the Tottenham Marshes. The Marshes have an abundance of wildlife and plants to admire which we hope to spot along the way as well as getting to know each other.

The walk will last roughly one hour, and we will finish up back at the café for a cold drink and snack.

Hidden Pride of Haringey: A Walking Tour Through 400 years of LGBTQ+ Heritage in Tottenham

Meeting Point: The clocktower main entrance of Bruce Castle Museum at 6.50. Tour begins at 7pm

Let our guides Angela Mascolo, Postgraduate in Public History at Royal Holloway, and Deborah Hedgecock, Curator of Bruce Castle Museum, lead you on a guided walking tour starting from Bruce Castle Museum and Archive in the north through to south Tottenham and Seven Sisters Station.

Walking along and near Tottenham High Road, explore with them buildings and places that uncover hidden histories and reveal fascinating new research and inspiring stories of Haringey's LGBTQ+ heritage from the past four centuries.

Bruce Castle Museum and Archive is a heritage partner in the London Unseen (external link) season of trails, tours and events that celebrate the many incredible histories of the City. The programme is curated on behalf of the Mayor of London's Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

We will be joined by Julian Nichols, founder of dance organisation Bodies in Action, as part of #ACTivateOurFuture initiative. 

While society continues to expand its acceptance of gender there is still a lot of unexplored and unimagined possibilities. Bodies in Action pushes our gender forward-thinking through progressive artistic representations about what it means to live and move in a spectrum of gendered ways.

A physical space-based social meetup and drop-in at Wise Thoughts for LGBT women and guests. 

We will be joined by musician Emily Shapiro as part of #ACTivateOurFuture initiative. 

Emily Shapiro is a bass clarinettist and clarinettist dedicated to exploring and creating new music. Composing and improvising are central to her career, and she has been an active performer of Balinese gamelan for 10 years and has also explored jazz, klezmer, rock and electroacoustics.


Rainbow Crafts and Nature Walk

LGBTQI+ Talk: What LGBTQI+ history means to me

Niranjan Kamatkar FRSA, of Wise Thoughts

A talk by Niranjan Kamatkar, CEO and Artistic Director of Wise Thoughts (external link) - a Wood Green Library-based BAME and LGBTQI+ issue-based arts charity.

Niranjan will outline some historical LGBTQI+ references related to his childhood and early adult life in the Indian city of Bombay (now known as Mumbai), and on helping to lead the struggle for LGBTQI+ equality and decriminalisation of homosexuality in India, and then subsequently internationally including here in UK. He will be sharing the knowledge, harnessed through historical texts and scriptures that he has studied from childhood till today, on the rich gamut of Queer cultures and identities.

He will also share and provide a valuable insight into local and national developments in the UK and sharing his own experiences and observations of living and working in Haringey, as well as the rich intersectionality within the LGBTQI+ diaspora.

The Chosen Haram at Jacksons Lane

The Chosen Haram deals with themes around sexuality, faith, addiction and connection. It tells the story of two queer men and their chance meeting through a dating app, portraying the highs and lows of their relationship and the barriers they face, both social and cultural, in seeking happiness and personal fulfilment. Performed on two Chinese poles this emotionally candid yet heart-warming story unfolds with gravity defying tricks and extraordinary movement.

Co-creator and performer Sadiq Ali was born and raised in Edinburgh. Trained at the National Centre for Circus Arts, he has performed with Ockham's Razor as well as developing his own work. Actor and circus artist Hauk Pattison has appeared in productions at National Theatre and RSC, and in films including Notes on a Scandal.

The Chosen Haram has been developed with residencies in Scotland and with the support of Jacksons Lane.

LGBT+ History Month Film Screening; 'Supernova' (2020)

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star in this British drama written and directed by Harry Macqueen.

Having been diagnosed with early onset dementia, novelist Tusker (Tucci) and his partner of 20 years, pianist Sam (Firth), tour England in their camper van, visiting friends and family before Tusker's condition worsens. However, their love for one another is put to the test as Tusker becomes resigned to his fate and Sam remains unwilling to give up hope.

Broadway Brunch

Broadway Brunches are fortnightly social lunches for residents living in the Homes for Haringey supported housing schemes. On February 9 we'll be celebrating LGBT+ History Month with music, glamour, and a relevant supportive and informative talk from a local provider.

Broadway Brunch was developed as part of the Together Project which works through the arts to provide creative spaces for residents of Haringey aged 50+ and for people living with dementia. The project is aimed at anyone experiencing social isolation and looking for a welcoming and warm community space to join.

LGBTQ+ Poetry Reading and Talk with author Andreena Leeanne

Andreena Leeanne, author of Charred

Writing workshop facilitator, poet and author of 'Charred', Andreena Leeanne presents an event based on her autobiographical work. Andreena writes and performs poetry to come to terms with and speak out about her personal experiences with homelessness, mental health, LGBTQ+, identity, childhood sexual abuse and many other challenges she has faced in her life. By speaking her truth, she hopes to inspire and empower others to speak and write theirs.

In 2018 Andreena was Stonewall's Black History Month Role Model and was shortlisted for a National Diversity Award for Positive LGBT+ Role Model in 2021.

Also in 2021, Andreena became a trustee of Action Breaks Silence which is a charity focussed on ending violence against women and girls. 

Copies of Charred will be availble for purchase at this event.

Positive Rainbow Haringey and Met Police Stall

Positive Rainbow Haringey run a weekly sexual health stall for the LGBT+ community.

On 23 February, Sergeant James Donald will be joining to answer any questions about hate crime – what it is, how to report it, and how to access support.
