Respite Policy Consultation

This consultation is now closed.

The consultation ran from 24 October 2017 to 16 January 2018.

Haringey Council together with Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) consulted on a draft respite policy, which you can read below.

What happens next

The new respite policy came into effect on 1 April 2018. You will be able to talk about respite as part of your care and support plan.

What we consulted on

What is the purpose of the policy?

This policy is intended to provide clarity for carers, service users and practitioners around our joint approach to respite care provision in the borough for children, young people and adults.

Why did we consult?

Haringey Council and the CCG recognise the invaluable support that carers provide to the family, friends or neighbours that they care for. This vital contribution means many people are able to have a continued quality of life within their own home - preventing or delaying the need for institutionally based care.

Although carers recognise the rewarding and positive aspects of their role, there is also evidence that many carers experience negative impacts which can affect their physical and emotional health and wellbeing and ultimately their ability to continue in their caring role.

The respite policy focuses on what happens when a carer cannot provide care in the short term. This can require respite care to be arranged as an important part of wider support planning for a cared for person who is eligible for social care or health funding.

We wanted to find out your views on the respite policy and ensure that all carers (including young carers), professionals and residents understand the role of respite for people with health and care needs and how respite services are delivered in Haringey.
