New SENDCOs

Support for new SENDCos or SENDCos new to Haringey

There are lots of support and advice available for you if you are new to the role of SENDCo or new to being a SENDCo in Haringey.

You can find out more about the specific support available below. If you can’t find what you are looking for, email Ellika McAuley, the SEND adviser, at ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk or talk to your school educational psychologist.

SENDCo Mailing List

We send regular updates to SENDCOs via email. Register your name and contact on the mailing list by emailing SENDComms@haringey.gov.uk.

SENDCo Induction Meeting

All new SENDCos are offered a one-to-one induction meeting with the SEND adviser in the first half term of being in role. This meeting which takes place in your school, involves an overview of what is available in Haringey and where to find key information.

You will explore together the Haringey new SENDCo checklist and identify any areas where you need further support. To arrange your Induction Meeting contact ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk.

New to Haringey SENDCo Briefing Course

This 5-part course takes place in the first half of the year. The 5 sessions cover the following topics:

  • Session 1: Welcome Event
  • Session 2: Funding and Transition
  • Session 3: Haringey Services
  • Session 4: Applying for EHCPs
  • Session 5: Wider Haringey Services

There will also be opportunities to network with other new SENDCos and share successes and challenges. To book the course, email ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk.

SENDCo Buddies

We have a team of experienced SENDCos who support schools to deliver strong, inclusive practices and run the cluster groups. Each new SENDCo is eligible for a free half-day of support from a team member, and schools can also commission further support should they need it.

You can meet with your buddy at the New SENDCo Welcome Event.

Haringey SENDCo Forum

Our SENCo Forums are a great place to meet other SENDCos across Haringey and an opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise about special educational needs and inclusion. The agenda for our forums is driven by our SENDCos and focuses on topics they would like further reflection on and support with.

We also regularly invite organisations and speakers to our forums, so it's a brilliant way of deepening your knowledge of what's available locally, the national SEND picture, and networking with others in the field of SEND.

The dates for the forums for 2023-24 are:

  • Wednesday 1 November 2023, 9am to 12.30pm
  • Wednesday 21 February 2024, 9am to 12.30pm
  • Wednesday 5 June 2024, 9am to 12.30pm.

You can register for the sessions, email ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk.

National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo) Training

All SENDCos new to the role must complete the NASENCO award within three years of appointment. Haringey does not run this programme themselves, but it can be accessed from a number of providers. Most Haringey SENCos have completed it with the Institute of Education.

Whole School SEND and National Association for Special Educational Needs (NASEN)

Whole School SEND (external link) and NASEN (external link) provide training and resources to support new and experienced SENDCos.

New SENDCos may find the following particularly helpful:
