The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

The 14 Haringey parks which have been awarded Green Flags include 10 which are managed by the council, as well as Alexandra Palace Park (run by the Alexandra Park & Palace Charitable Trust), Highgate Wood (managed by the Corporation of London), the Railway Fields Local Nature Reserve (managed by The Conservation Volunteers/TCV in partnership with Haringey Council) and Tottenham Marshes (run by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority).

Alexandra Palace Park and Highgate Wood also both achieved the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management and promotion of its historic features.

In addition, the Friends of Hornsey Church Tower, the Friends of Lordship Recreation Ground and The Gardens Residents’ Association have been awarded Green Flag Community Awards for their work on the Hornsey Churchyard, the Lordship Woodland and The Gardens Community Garden. These were three of only 48 such awards made in London.

Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Emily Arkell, said:

We know just how important our parks are for everyone here in Haringey, so I’m absolutely delighted that we have retained all 10 Green Flag Awards this year.

This is a testament to our fantastic Parks team, as well as our many Friends groups, commercial stakeholders, event organisers, external funders, sports clubs, volunteers and other local community organisations who put in so much time and effort to make our parks clean, safe and welcoming places for people to enjoy.

With the Green Flag Community Awards highlighting the priceless contribution that communities make to our parks and greenspaces, I’d like to congratulate the Friends of Hornsey Church Tower, the Friends of Lordship Rec and The Gardens Residents’ Association for their fantastic and well-deserved achievements as well.

The 10-strong list of Haringey’s council-run parks to be awarded a Green Flag this year is as follows:

  • Bruce Castle Park
  • Downhills Park
  • Ducketts Common
  • Finsbury Park
  • Lordship Recreation Ground
  • Markfield Park
  • OR Tambo Recreation Ground
  • Priory Park
  • Russell Park
  • Woodside Park

The Green Flag Scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said:

Congratulations to everyone involved in Haringey’s parks who have worked tirelessly to ensure that they achieve the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.

Quality parks and green spaces like Bruce Castle Park, Finsbury Park and OR Tambo Recreation Ground make the country a healthier place to live and work in.

Crucially, Finsbury Park is a vital green space for communities in Haringey, Hackney and Islington to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and great space for families to socialise. It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.
