Role of the Leader

Cllr Ejiofor

The Leader of the Council is elected every four years by all members of the council.

The Leader is responsible for setting the overall political and strategic direction for the council. He acts as the lead spokesperson and manages external relations including with Government, the Greater London Assembly and local and regional bodies; as well as managing the council’s relations with key stakeholders, residents, partners, statutory bodies such as the NHS, the voluntary sector and the business community and holding the council’s Chief Executive to account.

The Leader chairs meetings of the council’s Cabinet - the main decision making group on the council - and leads on council policy development and implementation, and on Haringey’s communication with central government, local residents and stakeholders.

The Leader agrees the council’s Forward Plan, which maps out when key decisions will be made by the Cabinet. He is also responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Administration’s manifesto commitments and core council strategies, including the Borough Plan.

More information about the role of the Leader can be found in part 2, Article 7.01 of the council's Constitution.
