Join us for a fascinating and engaging event exploring the life of Francis Barber, a key figure in the life of Dr Samuel Johnson, author of the first English dictionary.

Barber, born into slavery in Jamaica, came to England as a young boy and lived at Dr Johnson’s House in the mid-18th century. This historic museum, known as The House of Words, celebrates the power of language and learning. Barber’s story is a powerful symbol of Black presence and agency in 18th-century Britain, highlighting the intersections of race, slavery, and intellectual life.
