Haringey’s Mayor and Deputy Lieutenant lead Commonwealth Day celebrations

The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Lester Buxton, and the borough’s Deputy Lieutenant, Captain Peter Baker, led a flag-raising ceremony at George Meehan House this morning (Monday 11 March 2024) as Haringey celebrated Commonwealth Day.

With this year’s event proving particularly significant as April 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth, Cllr Buxton began today’s event with a few introductory remarks before handing over to Captain Baker to read the affirmation.

Prayers and reflections were also made by representatives of Haringey’s multi-faith community and there was a strong presence from the nearby St Thomas More Catholic School – with one pupil reciting a poem and another ultimately helping the Mayor raise the Commonwealth flag.

Haringey’s greatest strength is in its diversity and it’s important to acknowledge and appreciate just how truly representative this great borough of ours is of the wider world at large on days like Commonwealth Day.
