Drinking alcohol in public

Public spaces protection order (PSPO) rules about drinking alcohol in public.

You’re allowed to drink alcohol in a public place in Haringey, but in some areas you must stop drinking when you’re asked to by:

  • police officers
  • community support officers
  • people who are authorised to represent the London Borough of Haringey

If you do not stop drinking when asked, you’re committing an offence. Your alcohol can be confiscated and thrown away.

There are ‘public spaces protection orders’ (PSPOs) that say where these rules apply in Haringey.

PSPOs are a way of dealing with antisocial behaviour that affects the quality of people’s lives in a community.

If you commit an offence

If you’re found guilty, you’ll be liable for either:

  • a fixed penalty notice of £100
  • a maximum fine of £500

If you pay the fixed penalty notice on time, we will not take further action. You might be prosecuted if you do not pay on time.
