What councillors do

Part of: Local councillors

Councillors make policy and take decisions on:

  • the council's budget
  • council priorities
  • how the council should be run

They are supported and advised in their decision-making by officers who work in the various council departments and implement the decisions.

How your local councillor can help

Councillors also champion local issues. They can help by advising or directing you to someone who can help sort out your problem and can sometimes progress the case on your behalf.

Councillor surgeries

This advice and support is often done face to face in local councillor surgeries. Here you can meet with the councillor for your ward and discuss your issue.

You can find dates, times and locations of all councillor surgeries by searching for your councillor

Community leaders

As community leaders they also put forward proposals to improve their ward. This may include bringing together different community groups to develop a case for change.
