Sexual Health Consultation
During the summer of 2014, Haringey council ran a consultation on sexual health services in the borough, to get the feedback of Haringey residents and service users as to how these valuable services can realise their full potential.
Using a mixture of user surveys and focus groups, the consultation produced some very insightful and practical recommendations for future commissioning of sexual health provision within the borough
The priorities Haringey will be striving towards in sexual health are:
- Sexual health and contraception services need to be more accessible. Specifically, waiting times need to be shorter, clinics need to be open at more convenient hours, and the referral procedure needs to be easier. This includes other health professionals being aware of what can and cannot be done at sexual health clinics.
- People wanted more information and choices for contraception. For hormonal contraception, women wanted to know the side effects of each type of contraception, while across the board people felt that where condoms are offered, they should come in a variety of sizes, flavours, and with information about the most suitable kinds of contraception to use.
- Each focus group and round of surveying reflected that staff need to be friendly and aware of how to make diverse communities feel at home.
- Services need to be well publicised through information sources that people are likely to use the most, for example, friends and family, GPs and NHS services, sexual health clinics, and adverts on streets.
These improvements to Haringey's sexual health services will be ongoing.
If you have any specific recommendations please feel free to contact Haringey's sexual health commissioner Akeem Ogunyemi via email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 8489 2961.
