Variants of concern
COVID-19 variants of concern are variants of the original COVID-19 virus that have undergone one or more mutations in their gene structure, changing the properties of the virus to make it more transmissible, more severe or potentially less responsive to existing COVID-19 vaccines.
We have already had cases of the South African and Brazilian variants of concern in Haringey, and we have provided additional surge testing in these areas to monitor whether there has been any spread of the variants within the community.
Where variants of concern are identified, we work with the Government and Public Health England to conduct a risk assessment and determine the best response. This could be additional surge testing, school closures or local stay at home advice, as well as extra contact tracing.
