Co-designing Turnpike Lane

Part of: Improving Turnpike Lane

The Turnpike Lane Improvement Plan has been developed in partnership with the Turnpike Lane Traders’ Association and the Future Wood Green BID.

The design team were appointed in 2020 and are led by project architects, We Made That, and includes:

  • engineers Civic Engineers
  • lighting specialists Studio Dekka
  • graphic designers Maddison Graphic

A co-design approach has been a central part of the development of the proposals. Over 50 face-to-face and phone interviews took place with local traders and residents in 2020 to inform the initial analysis of the street.

This was followed by several co-design workshops that took place in the former Shine Café to test different priorities.

And in 2021, local students from Grieg City Academy and the Gospel Centre on Wightman Road took part in a youth engagement programme to tell us what they think of the area and what they would like to see change.

Design proposals were developed in 2022 and 2023, and a public exhibition took place in summer 2023 at the All Good Bookshop to showcase the concept design ideas and hear feedback from the community.

In all, over 200 people have given us their feedback, which has helped shape the Turnpike Lane improvement plan’s objectives and prioritise the types of improvements and key areas to tackle.
