Demonstrations and parades

Demonstrations and parades on the public highway are usually managed by the Police and they should be contacted to make the necessary arrangements. However it is a good idea to also notify the council so that local traffic can be coordinated during the demonstration.

Play Streets

Play Streets offer local residents the opportunity to occasionally close roads to through traffic to allow children to play in the street.

Applications for Play Streets are free to make and should generally be made six weeks in advance of the proposed closure date. Applicants should demonstrate that they have agreement from affected residents to close the street and must make sure that closures are supervised and maintained at all times during the event.

Further tips and guidance on setting up Play Streets can be found at the Playing Out website (external link).

Some roads - such as red routes, bus routes and classified roads - are not deemed suitable for Play Streets. Full information, including a list of excluded roads, can be found in the documents below:

  • Appendix 2 - List of roads unsuitable for Play Streets (PDF, 60KB)
