Statement from Cllr Adam Jogee on police misconduct report

Publication date:
October 17, 2022

Cllr Adam Jogee, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Jobs and Community Cohesion, has issued a statement following the publication today of the Interim Report on Misconduct in the Metropolitan Police Service by Baroness Louise Casey.

Cllr Jogee said:

“On Friday, I met with the new Metropolitan Police Service Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley alongside the Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, the Chief Executive Andy Donald, and the MP for Tottenham, David Lammy MP. We discussed a range of issues about policing in Haringey and how we can work together to keep our people safe.

“The findings of Baroness Casey's report on misconduct are both deeply shocking and, indeed, very worrying. Our community needs a police service that acts with integrity, and which treats everyone with respect and dignity. It is clear that the Metropolitan Police Service has failed to live up to these standards in recent years.

“We welcome the Commissioner’s initial response to the report, and trust that action will be taken swiftly to transform the culture, systems and leadership that have led to the issues that have been exposed.

“The safety of local people is and will remain a top priority for the council. To achieve this residents need to have confidence that the police are on their side, and we - as a council - need an honest and open working relationship with the police and law enforcement.

"We will be following up with the Commissioner, Borough Commander and the Mayor of London in the coming months, and years, to ensure that progress and improvements are made, that policing by consent means exactly that and - most importantly - that residents have a police service they can trust to keep them safe.”
