Son surprise for Tottenham's young footballers

Publication date:
August 28, 2019

It has been a summer of football fun for Haringey’s young people, thanks to top class football training sessions put on for free by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation during the school holidays.

The Foundation’s Premier League Kicks programme provided young people aged from 7 to 19 with help on their football skills at several locations across the borough.

At one session, the group received a surprise visit from Spurs and South Korea star striker Son Heung-min, who spoke to us after having a kickabout with the kids in attendance.

Q. How important do you feel it is for football clubs to be involved in their local communities?

A. I think it’s very, very important for the children and as a player I find it really enjoyable. As a child I couldn’t imagine having training like this. The kids are really enjoying themselves and that makes me happy.

Q. What did football do for you as a young person?

A. Everything! It was my dream to play. I wanted to play football all day. These kids have endless energy. I hope they were happy to see me and I really enjoyed being with them.

Q. What do you enjoy most about coming to these community events and spending time with young players?

A. It’s really fun playing football with the young lads. Playing football is always fun for me and seeing the local kids having fun too makes me really happy.

Q. Your father coached you. You look like you’re having fun coaching the children here. Do you think you’d make a good coach one day?

A. I don’t know! Right now I want to focus on my playing career until I can’t play anymore, then after that we will see what happens!

Haringey has also had a full programme of sports and activities for young people during the summer. There’s more on the schedule of events here.
