More Haringey residents to benefit from new, high-quality council homes
Haringey’s programme to deliver a new generation of council homes took another step forward with the announcement that 21 properties will be acquired for residents at two developments in the borough.
Approval was given by the Cabinet last night (9 November) to buy an additional 14 homes at Hale Wharf. This follows the decision in July to buy 177 homes on the site.
Set in a beautiful location overlooking the Paddock Community Nature Park and Walthamstow Wetlands, and just a few minutes’ walk from Tottenham Hale station, all the homes will be adaptable and 27 of them are wheelchair accessible.
Sustainability will be at the heart of the development, with tenants also benefitting from high-quality landscaping and direct access to play areas.
At the same meeting, councillors gave the green light to purchase high-quality properties at a residential scheme in Crawley Road, Wood Green.
The site will deliver seven council homes, including a three- and a four-bedroom home, in a landscaped scheme with extensive cycle storage. The development will create a new pedestrian and cycle link, connecting Crawley Road with Downhills Way and Lordship Recreation Ground.
Both acquisitions form part of an ambitious programme to deliver 3,000 new council homes in the next decade, with 1,000 of these started on site or completed by March 2022.
Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for House Building, Placemaking and Development, said:
I’m delighted by these acquisitions, which not only represent good value for the council but will deliver high quality council homes for local people.
I’m proud that a key feature of the council’s housing programme is creating a generation of high quality homes.
Hale Wharf is in a prized location and these new homes will be life-changing for households living in temporary accommodation or in deeply unsuitable housing.
The council is committed to providing the safe, secure and spacious council homes our residents so desperately need and we are on track to have 1,000 homes completed or under construction by March 2022, with 3,000 set to be completed by 2032.
