Met office issues red alert heat warning

The Met Office have issued a red alert heat warning for extreme heat next week - putting the UK on national emergency footing. Haringey has been identified as one of the areas where local communities may be hit hardest.

Temperatures could get as high as 40°C (104F) for the first time and people are being urged to prepare and take action to protect themselves and others from the extreme heat.

How to stay safe during this time:

• Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm). If you have to go out, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat or light scarf to protect yourself.
• Take water with you when travelling away from home and drink regularly throughout the day to avoid dehydration.
• Avoid extreme physical activity.
• Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes.

If you are struggling to cope with the heat, there are a number of designated indoor 'Cool Spaces' in Haringey:

• Coombes Croft Library, High Road, London N17 8AG

You can also cool off in any shaded areas of the borough’s parks and public green spaces, or near ponds or open water.
