Marking VE Day from home
Plans may have changed, but Haringey is still marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day today and the brave sacrifice made by our Second World War heroes.
To mark 75 years since the end of the war, Haringey Council’s Head of Music and Performing Arts, Peter Desmond, has performed a poignant rendition of the Last Post.

The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheila Peacock, has also shared her memories from the time as a then-eight-year-old girl, recalling how she was sent to live in Northampton and Lancing.
The Mayor says:
When we were told the war was over, we were so excited… We were singing and cheering as we walked around the streets and people came out from their houses to cheer with us because they were also delighted that the war was now – at last – over.

Historical photos and information will be available on our Libraries pages and we have dedicated VE Day activities and recommendations pages.
Although coronavirus has put a stop to street parties and group gatherings, English Heritage has come up with a number of activities (external link) to get you into the spirit.
The government has also created a VE Day toolkit (external link) to help you print off your own bunting and window posters.
There is also a nationwide Toast to the Heroes of WW2 today at 3pm, where people will raise a glass from their own homes.
