Leader's statement - Earthquakes in Turkey & Syria

Publication date:
February 6, 2023

Cllr Peray Ahmet, Leader of Haringey Council, has issued a statement following the major earthquakes that have taken place in Turkey and Syria.

“We have many people from the region who live and work in this borough and I have a heavy heart today following the sad and tragic news that has come out of southern Turkey and northern Syria.

“I would like to extend my condolences and thoughts to everyone who has been adversely affected by, or caught up in, this unfolding tragedy.

“With the death toll from today’s two earthquakes set to continue rising sharply in the coming hours and days, I’d like to remind our residents with family links in Turkey and Syria that we remain on hand to provide any appropriate assistance, help and support that we can to them at this very tough and difficult time.

“We will be in touch with local community groups and national groups and let our residents know what they can do to help in terms of fundraising and aid.

“As a borough, Haringey has always been blessed with fantastic community spirit and it really does go a long way in highly challenging times such as these. We need to come together as a collective community as, sadly, there may yet be more sorrow and heartbreak to come for some of us here in Haringey.”
