Lateral Flow Test Centre to close
Haringey’s Lateral Flow COVID-19 test centre at Tottenham Green Pools and Fitness Leisure Centre is to close on Friday (5 November) for on-site testing but will remain open as a collection point for home test kits. The centre, which has operated since March as a test centre for asymptomatic people (not showing any symptoms of COVID-19), has been open to the public as a walk-in centre for testing, without the need to book.
Much has changed with COVID-19 testing during the pandemic and the public can now access home test kits from a variety of locations, including many pharmacies across the borough, as well as all the borough’s public libraries.
In addition, members of the public can collect home test kits:
- From our teams of public engagement officers, out and about in the community.
- on-site at secondary schools and colleges
- through workplace testing programmes, on-site or at home, if provided by employers
- by ordering a home test kit online (external link)
Initially, Rapid or Lateral Flow Test Centres played a big part in expanding access to asymptomatic testing for the public. However, as people have become used to regular testing, most choose to do it at their own convenience, using home test kits. As a result, the number of people visiting the test centre at Tottenham Green has gradually reduced over time, prompting the decision to close the on-site testing facility at the centre.
Dr Will Maimaris, Director of Public Health at Haringey Council said:
“COVID-19 has not gone away, and infection rates remain a concern. It is therefore extremely important that people continue to test themselves twice a week, using a Lateral Flow Device (rapid test kit), whether or not you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
“One in three people infected with COVID-19, do not experience any symptoms, but can pass on the virus to others, who may become seriously ill. An important way we can reduce transmission rates in the community, is by identifying those who are carrying the virus and getting them to self-isolate, rather than infect others.”
