Help shape plans for the borough’s first e-bike scheme

Publication date:
January 24, 2023

Residents, businesses and community groups are being encouraged to help shape provision of the borough’s first pay-as-you go electric bike scheme.

Haringey Council plans to launch a trial hire scheme from Spring 2023, giving local people more opportunities for affordable, active travel, while also cutting pollution and congestion and improving public health.

Ahead of the roll out of the Streets for People initiative, the council has created an online community space for local people to share their views and ensure everyone’s voices are heard.

Visitors to the accessible site can find a range of features including a survey and interactive map to pinpoint potential free-floating and marked on-street parking locations for dockless bikes.

Cllr Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport said:

We want to do all we can to encourage people to travel actively, and firmly believe that a well-managed and controlled e-bike sharing scheme can help in our ambition of becoming a cycling borough.

Cycling has so many benefits, from supporting residents’ health and wellbeing to reducing traffic and improving air quality.  The scheme is an important part of our Streets for People programme, and we want to get this right.

The feedback of residents is important to us and will help inform and shape the final proposals for the scheme.  Get involved and have your say.

To avoid the problem of abandoned dockless bikes creating a mess and obstructing pavements, a key feature of the scheme in Haringey will be, where possible, the use of bays where cyclists should leave bikes once they have finished their journey.

E-bikes compared to conventional bicycles can break down the barriers that stop some people from cycling, such as fitness and limited confidence – meaning more people will take up the option of travelling by two wheels.  They also provide an affordable and convenient way for residents to replace car journeys with a sustainable travel option.

Go to https://haringeydocklessbikes.commonplace.is/ to have your say.  The deadline for feedback is Sunday 19 February 2023.

Alternatively, you can email your comments to docklessbikes@haringey.gov.uk  or write to: Transport Planning, Haringey Council, 5th Floor Alexandra House, Station Road, Wood Green, London N22 7TR.
