Haringey at the forefront of national public health
Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy, Haringey Council’s Director of Public Health, has been elected as the next President of the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH).
The prestigious organisation is the representative body for Directors of Public Health in the UK, working to improve and protect public health through presenting the views of Directors of Public Health; advising on public health policy and legislation; offering a support network for public health directors, and developing professional practice.
Jeanelle, who has served as ADPH vice-president since 2013, will take the helm in May for the next three years, succeeding outgoing president Dr Andrew Furber.
Jeanelle trained and worked as a doctor in South Africa and the UK, specialising in public health in the UK. She was deputy director of public health in Nottingham before becoming Haringey’s Director of Public Health in 2010.
With a longstanding history of advocating for public health, Jeanelle has provided leadership on challenging and longstanding issues such as health inequalities and mental health.
“I am delighted to have been elected into this role by my peers. Directors of Public Health play a vital role as system leaders and advocates for the improvement and protection of the health and wellbeing of our local populations.
“As President of the ADPH, I will do my utmost to mobilise our collective skills and dynamism to support local public health to meet the challenges ahead – and to ensure that our unique local perspective influences national policy discussions.”
Haringey Council Chief Executive, Zina Etheridge, said:
“Huge congratulations to Jeanelle on such a well-deserved election.
“I am delighted that the leadership and insight that Jeanelle has exercised here in Haringey and as vice-president of ADPH will now have even greater impact in the public health community, helping to improve the health and wellbeing of people up and down the UK.”
