Haringey Council works with partners to address concerns of Muslim community
Ahead of Islamophobia Awareness Month, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Jobs and Community Cohesion, Councillor Adam Jogee led representatives of Haringey Council at a meeting at the London Islamic Cultural Society on Tuesday evening to discuss issues affecting the Muslim community in Haringey.
The meeting was called in response to recent security concerns affecting Islamic institutions and places of worship in north London.
Attendees at the meeting, included the Police Borough Commander for Haringey and Enfield DCS Caroline Haines, councillors from the London Borough of Haringey, representatives from the Mayor of London’s community engagement team and members of the newly-formed North London Council of Mosques, pledged to work together more closely to improve security and tackle hate and intolerance.
Councillor Adam Jogee said:
“Tuesday’s meeting gave us the opportunity to stand in solidarity with Haringey’s vibrant and diverse Muslim community and to reaffirm our commitment to tackling all forms of hate crime across our borough. It was good to see the Borough Commander and members of the Mayor of London’s team at the meeting to ensure we are all on the same page and are working together to effectively address the concerns of this important section of our community.
“As a council we are committed to making sure that Haringey is – and remains - a safe place for people of all faiths and none to go about their lives and gather with their friends, families and communities in peace.
"I look forward to working with our Muslim community and other faith communities to put our words into action and show by our deeds that there is no place for hate in Haringey – not now and not ever.”
