Flytipping in Haringey: The facts

Publication date:
February 16, 2017

Flytipping is a crime that blights our streets in Haringey and across London. It is disgusting, selfish and costs taxpayers in Haringey more than £3million a year. We care about our borough and so do the people who live and work here. But a small minority are ruining our environment. Our enforcement teams are working non-stop to catch flytippers and we have tough measures to deal with those we catch. But we need your help to identify more of these criminals and tackle flytipping.

The facts:

  • We spend more than £3million a year dealing with flytipping - money that could be going on other vital services. This is while we are facing budget cuts of £20million, on top of £160million we have already been forced to save.

  • We have raised on-the-spot fines from £80 to £400, without an early payment option, which is the maximum we can charge

  • We record littering such as dumped black bags as flytips, which some other councils do not

  • Large scale flytipping can be punished with a £50,000 fine, or a prison sentence

  • If you give your rubbish to someone who does not have a licence and they dump it, the flytip will be traced back to you and you could be fined

Our team are out every day looking for evidence, analysing CCTV footage, talking to the public. We take this issue very seriously and will punish anyone we catch, but it is very difficult to trace flytippers. This is why we need your help. If you see anyone dumping rubbish or have any information about them, their vehicle, anything at all, let us know. You can fill out a form here:  http://www.haringey.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/rubbish-and-recycling/street-cleansing/dumped-rubbish-enforcement

To report dumped rubbish or flytipping, register or log in to My Account and then select “Add a Report”, then select the category from the drop down menu. You can also use the Our Haringey app to report this via your mobile phone while out and about. Alternatively please contact the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre: Email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.com
