Face coverings in shops are mandatory from Friday 24 July
From Friday 24 July, face coverings will be mandatory in shops and supermarkets.
A face covering includes both masks and scarves or other textile items that can be used to continually cover the nose and mouth without having to be held in place by hand.
The rules for shops will be enforced by the police, with anyone disregarding them at risk of a fine of up to £100. This will be reduced to £50 if people pay within 14 days.
Children under 11 and those with certain disabilities will be exempt.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) can spread predominantly by droplets from coughs, sneezes and speaking. These droplets can also be picked up from surfaces, if you touch a surface and then your face without washing your hands first. This is why social distancing, regular hand hygiene, and covering coughs and sneezes is so important in controlling the spread of the virus.
The best available scientific evidence is that, when used correctly, wearing a face covering may reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets in certain circumstances, helping to protect others.
Be prepared, wear a face covering, shop locally and shop safely.
