Bruce Grove West Green low traffic neighbourhood trial launches on 1 November

Publication date:
October 24, 2022

Dozens of residential streets in West Green and central Tottenham will be reclaimed for the community when a new low traffic neighbourhood trial launches in the east of the borough next month.

Part of the council’s Haringey Streets for People programme, the Bruce Grove West Green scheme is being introduced on 1 November 2022 to reduce carbon emissions, reduce road danger, improve air quality and support residents to walk, cycle and shop locally.

It features 21 traffic filters, mostly camera enforced, to stop motor traffic using the neighbourhood as through route.  All homes and businesses remain accessible by motor vehicle, including cabs and deliveries.

A full exemptions criteria and applications procedure is in place to enable Blue Badge holders living within or on the immediate boundary of the LTN, emergency and waste vehicles, and transport services for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to travel through the filters.  Residents within and outside the LTN can also apply for an exemption under the individual circumstances category where there is a demonstrated medical need.

Bruce Grove West Green is the third low traffic neighbourhood trial following the introduction of similar schemes in Bounds Green and St Ann’s in August this year.

Cllr Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport, said:

“There is an urgent need to reduce road traffic to tackle the escalating threat of Climate Change. Cars have been taking over neighbourhood roads bringing with them toxic pollution, noise nuisance and increased road danger.

“We’re introducing this low traffic neighbourhood trial because we want to reduce the overall volume of traffic in and around the area so that the whole community can benefit from cleaner air and safer streets.

“This is the beginning of a truly transformative journey in which pedestrians and active travel are prioritised and neighbourhood streets become welcoming, liveable and inclusive spaces for all.“

The new measures will initially be in place under an 18-month experimental traffic order.  The council is keen to hear the view of residents and businesses and will undertake a feedback exercise in around three months once the scheme has settled in.

Residents and businesses have received a detailed booklet explaining how the scheme will affect them.

The announcement follows several measures already introduced in response to an extensive engagement exercise in 2021, including new Schools Streets and cycle hangars.

Haringey Streets for People is part of the council’s vision for a fairer, greener borough and will play a key role in creating a zero-carbon Haringey by 2041.
