Affectionately known as the ‘Red Duster,’ the Red Ensign was raised by the Deputy Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Michelle Simmons-Safo, at George Meehan House in Wood Green.
Cllr Simmons-Safo was joined by the Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, the borough’s Deputy Lieutenant, Captain Peter Baker RNR, RD, ward councillors and community leaders from the Haringey Multi-Faith Forum.
This annual awareness day highlights the indispensable role of merchant seafarers in the past, present and future.
They handle 95% of the UK’s traded goods today, with the seafarers’ bravery having kept supply lines open during global conflicts and crises like the world wars and the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Seafarers’ Charity’s ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ campaign, which celebrates and champions these everyday heroes and attempts to address a lack of awareness about the contributions of merchant seafarers.
