Last night (17 June 2025), Cabinet agreed a pioneering five-year plan for the council’s ambitious Streets for People initiative as it continues to encourage active and sustainable travel, reduce congestion and improve air quality.
The transformative programme will deliver a broad range of schemes including new cycle routes, School Streets, cycle hangars, EV charging points, pedestrian crossings, bus priority, improved walking routes, traffic monitoring and public realm improvements.
Each Streets for People project is subject to its own consultation to ensure that the views of local communities are carefully considered.
The schemes are made possible with funding from TfL and the council’s Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL).
Cllr Mike Hakata, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport, said:
Our Streets for People investment plan is a vital part of the borough’s transformative journey towards more vibrant communities.
By reallocating road space, investing in active travel infrastructure, and enhancing public transport, we're not just changing how people get around – we're unlocking the potential for a profound shift in our collective quality of life.
As we embark on this journey together, we have a unique opportunity to shape a future where urban mobility is synonymous with freedom, health, equity, and sustainability.
At the same Cabinet meeting, councillors agreed the introduction of three new Schools Streets at St Francis de Sales RC Infant and Junior, Bounds Green Infant and Junior and Welbourne Primary following extensive engagement with the parents, schools and local community.
It will bring the total number of Schools Streets in Haringey to 37, with children at more than 40 educational establishments enjoying healthier journeys to school.
School Streets encourage more children to walk, cycle or wheel to school in a safe, fun and active way, cutting air pollution and creating a more pleasant environment at the school gates.
