Haringey’s Gemma Short has been honoured with a prestigious Silver Award for Secondary School Teacher of the Year at the 2025 Pearson National Teaching Awards.

The Science Lead at Haringey Learning Partnership (HLP) - a network of alternative provision schools supporting students who face significant barriers in mainstream education - was selected from thousands and is now in the running for the Gold Award. This will be revealed at a star-studded London ceremony later this year on BBC One’s The One Show.

Since joining HLP in 2020, Gemma has completely revitalised the science curriculum.

The subject which was once initially considered too challenging, is now a subject that inspires confidence and ambition. Under her leadership, every student earns a Combined Science qualification, with some progressing to A-level studies.

Gerry Robinson, Executive Headteacher at Haringey Learning Partnership, said:

Gemma’s impact on our students and our school has been truly transformational. She brings energy, creativity, and deep commitment to everything she does.

Gemma has not only rebuilt science education at HLP but reshaped how our students see themselves - as capable, curious and full of potential. We are incredibly proud of her and thrilled to see her recognised nationally for the exceptional work she does every day.

Cllr Zena Brabazon, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools & Families, said:

Haringey is fortunate to have some of the best teachers, each playing a vital role in shaping the lives of young people in our borough. Students at HLP need extra support, care, and dedication, and with teachers like Gemma, we can be confident they are in safe hands, receiving the best possible foundation to thrive.

This is a fantastic achievement, and we are incredibly proud of both her and the entire team at HLP. Their commitment to delivering high-quality education for Haringey’s children is truly appreciated.

Gemma impact goes far beyond the classroom as she is a national voice for inclusive science education. Having spoken at major conferences and creating a UK-wide network for teachers in alternative provision, her leadership is opening doors, inspiring students with SEND, and proving that science is a space where every learner can succeed.
