Carers Week, which runs from Monday 9 June to Sunday 15 June, will feature a range of special events and initiatives aimed at bringing carers together, offering moments of relaxation, connection, and empowerment.
The council recently launched the first of many Carers Strategy Workshop sessions, creating a dedicated space for carers to connect, share experiences, and shape future support services.
This year’s theme, ‘Caring about Equality’, highlights the challenges unpaid carers face and underscores the need for greater recognition and support for their vital contributions.
To kick off the week, a light lunch, soothing yoga sessions, and uplifting music will be offered at the Winkfield Resource Centre to provide a well-deserved moment of respite and celebration for carers.
The programme also includes a talk with award-winning author Sara Challice, who will discuss ways for carers to achieve balance and equality in their daily lives. Additionally, carers can become workplace champions, advocating for better understanding and support in professional environments.
Further activities include coffee mornings, wellbeing sessions and will conclude with a Carers Week Celebration. A delicious barbecue will be held, refreshing drinks, and activities for all, to honour and thank carers for their incredible contributions to society.
Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care, and Wellbeing, said:
Caring about Equality is a powerful theme that sheds light on the everyday challenges faced by unpaid carers.
We are committed to working closely with carers, listening to their needs, and ensuring our services provide the right support for them. Our work on the carers’ strategy, working with and for local unpaid carers, is vitally important and we’re looking forward to its launch in the autumn.
In the meantime, this week is an important moment to recognise and support unpaid carers whose efforts our community depends on every day. Advocating for carers, offering crucial support, and ensuring their voices are heard is at the heart of our work in Haringey.
