Every June, the UK celebrates Refugee Week (19-25 June), with events held throughout the country to recognise the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees and migrants.
This year’s theme is Compassion. Compassion should be at the heart of how we treat people seeking refuge, and we can all do our part.
We are inviting families and residents to an event on Wednesday, 21 June from 3-8pm at Muswell Hill Methodist Church, 28 Page Lane, Muswell Hill, N10 1PP, to celebrate and recognise the contribution of migrants and refugees in Haringey.
There is no need to book, simply turn up to join in a number of activities, share different foods, meet one another, and celebrate our diverse cultures. The Council’s Resettlement Team will also be there to offer information, advice and guidance on support available for residents from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
It will be a fantastic day that highlights Haringey's rich cultural legacy.
Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing, said:
“I am looking forward to meeting some truly inspiring people at the Refugee Celebration Event and celebrating the contribution of all refugees and migrants to our community.
Refugee Week offers the opportunity to recognise the bravery of refugees worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes and countries to escape conflict and show compassion for their often harrowing experiences. Everyone has the right to seek sanctuary when displaced, regardless of who they are or where they come from. In Haringey we welcome newcomers to our borough with compassion and recognise their unique individual potential. We want people to settle well, and work to help them find opportunities that match their experience and skills, as well as grow new ones.
This World Refugee Week we reflect on the importance of welcoming and supporting those who arrive here, celebrating our common values and the contributions migrants and refugees made and make yesterday, today and tomorrow.”
