St Thomas More Catholic School Win Catholic Cup
Friday 23 June 2017
Last month, the St Thomas More Catholic School Sixth Form Football Team took to the pitch to play in the Catholic Schools Cup Final. Having narrowly missed out on the League title, it was the team’s last chance of silverware.
As the players took to the field, it was great to see a crowd of staff and pupils had turned out to support the boys - the atmosphere was palpable! The opposition team, Richard Challoner School, having travelled up from Surrey, made a lively start and the first goal of the match was for the Surrey side, albeit against the run of play.
Undeterred, the St Thomas More boys rallied and continued to press high up the pitch with some lovely interchanges of play down the right and after a foul from an opposition player, St Thomas More took a free kick just outside the box, scoring the equaliser. Neither team managed to score in the second half, not for lack of trying as Jaiden from the St Thomas More team narrowly missed a goal, bouncing the ball off the cross-bar.
With the score 1-1 at full-time, the match headed into extra time, continuing to be a tense affair with both teams apprehensive not to give anything away. It wasn't until the second half of extra time that the breakthrough happened and once again it was the quick feet of Jaiden who had the Richard Challoner defence spinning and in the last minutes of extra-time, Sixth Form student Daniel Sperni scored the winning goal for St Thomas More. The boys deservedly lifted the cup and were crowned this year’s Catholic Schools Cup winners.
