Haringey coronavirus (COVID-19) updates
New fines for illegal house parties
Anyone caught breaking national lockdown restrictions by attending house parties will face fines of up to £800, the Home Secretary announced yesterday.
Speaking at a Downing Street briefing, Priti Patel said the penalties will double for each repeat offence to a maximum level of £6,400.
These fines will apply to those who attend illegal gatherings of more than 15 people in homes flouting Covid-19 laws.
She said: “The science is clear: such irresponsible behaviour poses a significant threat to public - not only to those in attendance, but also to the wonderful police officers who attend to shut down these events.”
Officers can already hand out £10,000 on the spot fines to organisers of illegal gatherings.
Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Martin Hewitt welcomed the new fines, labelling house parties as "dangerous, irresponsible and totally unacceptable".
The current fine for people caught at house parties is £200 – reduced to £100 if paid early.

Hundreds more of Haringey most-in-need children to receive Free School Meals
Hundreds more Haringey children will be able to receive Free School Meals after Cabinet approved the expansion of its eligibility criteria tonight (Tuesday 19 January 2021).
As part of the council’s ambition to create a fairer and more equal borough, the most-in-need groups of children aged 7-10 who are not currently eligible for support under the Government scheme, will be able to apply for FSMs under the new expanded criteria for eligible primary schoolchildren from the Summer term onwards.
It is anticipated that up to as many as 650 extra children will be eligible to receive Free Schools Meals as a result of this expansion. In addition, this will be bolstered by a discretionary element of the fund.
We know that Covid-19 has had, and continues to have, a significant impact on household finances for a number of people across the borough. The discretionary fund will pay for up to an additional 140 children per day to receive a Free School Meal (25,000 meals a year), and will give schools more freedom to support families who find themselves in unexpected short-term financial hardship.
