Pandemic profiteers and coronavirus crooks
Residents are being warned about criminals seeking to profiteer from the coronavirus pandemic and criminal scammers exploiting the vulnerable.
London boroughs’ Trading Standards services have received more than 1,600 complaints about traders charging excessive prices since the pandemic started and there has also been a rise in criminal scams linked to the outbreak.
The top three most complained about business types on excessive prices were Pharmacies and Chemists, General/Convenience shops and Independent Supermarkets. Consumers are encouraged to report excessive prices to the Competition and Markets Authority (external link).
Haringey’s Trading Standards teams is also receiving reports of COVID-19 related scams that include text messaging, emails, phone calls and social media. Scammers are targeting both consumers and businesses that may have been identified as vulnerable.
- To report all frauds call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or visit the Action Fraud website (external link)
- Report concerns about doorstep or telephone cold-callers to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service Helpline on 0808 223 1133 or to Action Fraud, and in urgent cases to the police on 999.
- To report concerns about fake products or false claims made about products, contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer service helpline on 0808 223 1133 or via their online chat service (external link)
Test and Trace
The Government has launched the NHS Test and Trace service - designed to help identify, contain and control coronavirus.
Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions. This could include household members, people with whom they have been in direct contact, or within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes.
People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.
If those in isolation develop symptoms, they can book a test online (external link) or by calling 119.

Reopening Haringey’s schools
Thank you to all teaching and support staff in Haringey schools who have been there for our children throughout the ongoing lockdown as part of the national response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Government has advised that, where possible, primary schools and nurseries should begin a phased reopening from Monday 1 June (external link).
The council has been working closely with our education settings to understand their needs and help them prepare to open when they are ready (external link). It is highly likely that our schools will reopen at different stages and that their openings will be slow and considered, only building to a wider opening when schools are confident to do so and that is it right for our children and families.
Your child’s school will be in touch with you to let you know when they intend to re-open and the steps they have put in place to ensure social distancing guidance and safety measures can be followed.
For further information, contact your primary school or secondary school directly, or see our Reopening Haringey's schools page.
