Over-65s case studies
We spoke to some regular users of the Tottenham Green leisure centre to find out how they’ve been keeping fit.
Clovis Julien, 67, Tottenham
Clovis has always been very keen on exercise; he likes athletics and enjoys swimming. As well as attending Zumba twice a week, Clovis does badminton. Whenever he can, he also fits time in the gym to use the treadmill, rowing and bike machines. Although Clovis suffers from diabetes, blood pressure and prostrate problems, he doesn’t let them stop him from having an active life. Clovis said: “I don’t let them get in my way because I know that exercise is going to help me.”
Eileen O’Connor, 68, Tottenham
Since reaching retirement age, Eileen has been finding different ways to keep herself occupied. When she’s at the leisure centre, Eileen takes part in Pilates, meditation classes and Better with age aerobics. Despite not being in the best of health over the past few months, with a poor immune system and being asthmatic, Eileen still manages to fit in her weekly sessions of exercise.
To other over-65s, Eileen said they should just join in:
“Try it and I’m sure you will be very happy once you get into it.”
Lucille Thomas, 68, Wood Green
Lucille became a member of the leisure centre after seeing a poster for older residents, while attending a pensioners’ forum in the library next door. Since joining the leisure centre two years ago, Lucille’s life has improved greatly and she keeps herself busy with a range of activities including aerobics and yoga. Lucille thinks the leisure centre is a great place to meet people from different backgrounds and enjoys the warm, friendly atmosphere. Lucille said:
“It’s good for socialising, because there are so many different people who come here. You can meet someone who you can talk to and have a laugh.”
Tony Pasgali, 74, Tottenham
Tony has always tried to maintain a regular fitness plan throughout his life. He is a keen swimmer and used to swim a lot before he started attending classes at the leisure centre. Tony attends the Tottenham centre and takes part in three keep fit classes a week. Through regular exercise he has managed to stave off heart disease and diabetes.
Tony said the benefits are too good to ignore. He said:
“You’re keeping fit and healthy and you’re active. I really enjoy the classes and I think the leisure centre is a nice place to meet people.”
Evaun Williams, 79, Tottenham
Evaun started doing sport when she used to accompany her daughter to her school athletics training and got bored of standing around in the cold. Evaun’s routine covers a full week of exercise which includes athletic training, Thai Chai, Better with age aerobics, and Zumba. Her life has improved mentally and physically; she has made a lot of friends. and her body is able to withstand what she puts it through.
To encourage others to join the leisure centre, Evaun said:
“Just come out. You’ll make a lot of friends. You’ll surprise yourself with what you can do.”
Hilarie Joseph, 75, Tottenham
Retired nurse Hilarie is a passionate member of the leisure centre and attends almost every day. Her current fitness sessions are Body Blast, Better with age aerobics, Boot camp, Zumba, body conditioning, yoga, and Pilates! Hilarie said exercising makes her feel energetic and more alive and she gets to meet people. When encouraging others to keep fit she always tries to be positive. Hilarie said:
“If they come, they’ll try it and find they can do it and if they get the benefit, they’ll keep coming back.”
