Essex Jazz Collective

to

The EJC band was founded as a musical family with a passion for mainstream jazz [Swing, Latin, Bebop/HardBop, Blues] repertoire of public-appealing and technically demanding tunes, but also with the intention to add a twist to traditional jazz music. This collective of seasoned jazz musicians is based in the vibrant regions of Essex and Hertfordshire, united by our love for jazz and an eagerness to explore its boundless possibilities. Our ensemble is known for our innovative takes on jazz standards, swing rhythms, and the intricate melodies of Bebop. We aim to share our passion for jazz with audiences far and wide. We enjoy performing in a range of venues, from Art Galleries to Theatre Foyers, Pubs and Restaurants to Function Venues, and Stately Homes to Festivals.

Zak Barrett – Saxophones A former student of the Royal Northern College of Music, Zak has developed into a well-known saxophonist across the UK and internationally known for his jazz improvisation including collaborations with Guthrie Govan’s jazz-fusion Fellowship Band and also on stage as a duo with Guthrie recently in USA, Montreaux Jazz festival, Turkey, and the Eddie Lang Festival in Italy. His solo lines hail back to the classic jazz era of Turrentine, Coltrane, Stitt, Shorter and Young but with a fresh modern twist; A treat in whatever venue and event. Zak also created youth jazz projects in Thurrock, runs the Writtle Jazz Festival, and co-leads the Southend music services jazz workshop.

Tony Crosby – Keyboards Currently Director of Performing Arts at St Mary's CE High School, Cheshunt, Tony has several music projects on the go from his Composer/Arranger work [sounddesigned.co.uk] to his wide-ranging Piano/Keyboards work with the band Viridiann and stage musicals. Tony’s history extends into the pop world including the early Amy Winehouse years. He brings a vitality to the EJC band as the band flits from Blues/Swing to Latin-Jazz to Bebop styles.

Costa Fafalios – Percussion Costa played for Dave Jackson Trio (latterly the Jan Jackson trio) renowned for its cool retro jazz-blues style that introduced new arrangements of classic jazz / blues standards together with original DJT material.

Keith Hon – Bass A former student at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Keith now lives in Essex, UK and has found a perfect home in the EJC band in the Summer of 2023, bringing the groove to the band. Gareth Joice – Flugabone / Valve Trombone From Salvation Army band roots and enjoying the swing band numbers

Gareth switched to jazz and then founded the Essex Jazz Collective band in the Summer of 2023. The flugabone is a rare sight in the Europe, and is used to great effect as Gareth reuses lessons from his heroes: Jimmy Knepper, Jay Jay Johnson; Chet, Hubbard, Shorter to more modern stars Roy Hargrove, Guy Barker, and Chris Botti.

*Ritchie Roach – Guitar * Ritchie is multi-talented and has a history of playing in North Essex bands in various genres; From rock, jazz funk, pop covers and now diverted into jazz. Ritchie’s solo style switches effortlessly from blues and swing to Latin vibes and the occasional flamenco influence. His skill on stage is a delight to witness. Ritchie also sings various Blues and Songbook tracks that the audience always enjoy.
