New to SENDCo/New to Haringey SENDCO
There are lots of support and advice available for you if you are new to the role of SENDCO or new to being a SENDCO in Haringey.
You can find out more about the specific support available below. If you can’t find what you are looking for then email Ellika McAuley, the SEND adviser at ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk or talk to your school educational psychologist.
SENDCO Mailing List
We send regular updates to SENDCOs via email. Register your name and contact on the mailing list by emailing SENDComms@haringey.gov.uk.
New SENDCO Induction Meeting
All new SENDCOs are offered a one-to-one induction meeting with the SEND adviser in the first half term of being in role. This meeting which takes place in your school, involves an overview of what is available in Haringey and where to find key information.
You will explore together the Haringey new SENDCO checklist and identify any areas where you need further support. To arrange your Induction Meeting contact ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk.
New to Haringey SENDCo Briefing Course
This is a three-part online course which takes place in the Autumn term. The three sessions cover the following topics:
- Session 1: Who’s who in Haringey and local referral pathways
- Session 2: SEND Support and Provision Mapping
- Session 3: The EHCP and Annual Review Process
There will also be opportunities to network with other new SENDCOs and share successes and challenges. You can book onto the course here SEND Events (external link).
SENDCO Buddies
We are currently developing a cluster model to provide SENDCOs with opportunities to work collaboratively with neighbouring schools on shared priorities. Each cluster will have experienced SENDCO coaches who can support less experienced SENDCOs. We will be trialling this model in 2022-23 for the West Green and Haringey NLC and for Secondary Schools.
If you are not in either of these groups, then please contact ellika.mcauley@haringey.gov.uk and she will pair you up with an experienced SENDCO who will provide you buddy support.
Haringey SENDCO Forum
Our SENCO Forums are a great place to meet other SENCOs across Haringey and an opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise about different aspects of special educational needs and inclusion. The agenda for our forums is very much driven by our SENCOs and focus on topics that they would like further reflection and support with.
We also regularly invite organisations and speakers to our forums so it's a brilliant way of deepening your knowledge of what's available locally, the national SEND picture and to network with others in the field of SEND.
The dates for the forums for 2022-23 are:
- Wednesday 2 November 2022, 9am to 12.30pm - Hornsey School
- Wednesday 22 February 2023, 9am to 12.30pm - online
- Wednesday 7 June 2023, 9am to 12.30pm - Hornsey School
You can register for the sessions here SEND Events (external link).
NASENCO Training
All SENDCOs new to the role must complete the NASENCO award within three years of appointment. Haringey do not run this programme themselves, but it can be accessed from a number of providers. Most Haringey SENCOs have completed it with the Institute of Education.
Whole School SEND and NASEN
Whole School SEND (external link) and NASEN (external link) provide lots of training and resources to support both new and experienced SENDCOs.
New SENDCOs may find the following particularly helpful:
