Sensory Support Team - Vision
What our service does
We aim to improve the educational and life outcomes babies, children and young people with a sight loss.
We provide information, advice and support regarding educational management and all aspects of vision. Advice focuses on support for parents and carers, independence, access to the curriculum/books and materials, helpful technology, getting around safely (mobility), self help skills and improving the environment.
We work closely with babies, children, young people, their families/carers, staff in educational settings and other key professionals in the NHS and Social Care. The support we offer ranges from weekly to occasional visits throughout the year.
We offer visual awareness training to school staff and training in relation to individual pupils’ needs. We encourage families to attend activities and events where children and young people have the opportunity to meet others with sight loss.
Where service is located and the areas it covers
The team offers visits to pre-school children and their families/carers in their home, their local Children’s Centre or at another place of their choice.
All primary, special and secondary schools in Haringey have an allocated Advisory Teacher who will meet regularly with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to manage a caseload of identified children.
Parents can access advice or support either by contacting the service directly on 020 8489 8338 or by asking the SENCO in their child’s setting to contact us.
Who our service provides for
We provide for children and young people from birth to nineteen years with a visual impairment, many of whom have additional or more complex needs. We work in children and young people’s homes, early years settings and schools.

How decisions are made about eligibility for our service
Decisions are made about eligibility and levels of support based on the NatSIP (National Sensory Impairment Partnership) Framework and assessment by a qualified teacher of the visually impaired, in consultation with family/young person, other professionals and the local authority.
How we communicate with service users and how they are involved in decision making/planning
We aim to work closely with parents and carers. We may use early support materials (early years) and share a range of other leaflets and information sources published by RNIB and Action for Blind People. These give information about eye conditions, access to books and materials etc.
We also share information from other organisations such as Blind Children UK and the London Society for the Blind.
Where English is not the family’s first language we may communicate through a family member, school staff or use any interpreting services available.
We are able to provide materials in large print, audio or braille if required.
The regular discussion takes place with parents/carers, teachers, teaching assistants and SENCO’s (special educational needs coordinators), particularly where there is a high level of need.
Information sharing and training can be offered to parents/carers or details of useful support groups provided.
The Local Authority seeks feedback from service users on the service we provide.
How accessible our service is
The Advisory Teachers offer visits in a range of places in the Local Authority, including homes, educational settings and hospital clinics that all have disabled access.
We are available to parents at home or in Haringey schools and settings.
Training our staff have had in supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities
Those supporting pupils are qualified teachers of the visually impaired and those offering independence and mobility training are qualified children’s habilitation specialists.
