Business Pledge
Haringey’s business community are an integral part of what makes Haringey, Haringey.
In our Borough Plan we have made a commitment to Haringey businesses with our Business Pledge.
Haringey’s business pledge is to strengthen the working relationship between the council and local businesses, supporting the delivery of shared priorities that will benefit Haringey’s communities and businesses in the long run:
- Creating a safe and attractive environment for local businesses and their customers - recognising the unique character of our diverse high streets and business districts
- Supporting a local economy where businesses thrive and create quality employment and skills
- Using the council’s purchasing and contracting capacity to open up more opportunities to local firms and their employees
Business Events
We want to support our local businesses to raise their profile through UK and internationally recognised events. In 2020 we supported:
- Black Pound Day - June
- Independent’s Day/Month - July
- Business Women’s Day - September
- Global Entrepreneurship Week - November
- Small Business Saturday - December
Independents' Day
Saturday 4 July 2020
Independents' Day UK is a campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on 4 July: 'Independents’ Day’ itself. Independents account for something in the order of 65% of the approximately 290,000 retail outlets in the UK and are at the heart of local communities throughout the country.
Retailers
Independent retailers offer choice, diversity of product and service, tradition as well as innovation, and a more personal service to customers. They are also job creators and contributors to local and national economies. And with retail spending under pressure, never have they needed our support more.
Shoppers
It’s no secret that shoppers want diversity in their High Streets and independent retailers that give their towns a distinct character and service. So buying those new clothes, meeting your DIY requirements, shopping for a piece of kitchenware, getting a gift and a card for someone special, treating your pet or just having a coffee and something to eat with an independent outlet makes the world of difference.
What happened in Haringey?
On the day we featured stories from local independent retailers on our social media accounts.
In Bruce Grove, Tottenham, we celebrated all things local. The Tottenham Traders’ Partnership run a safe-distance family friendly, happy shopper event from 11am to 7pm, with stilt walkers and children’s entertainers, alongside an Etsy market. Holcombe Market was also open throughout the day with special discounts available on certain products and services.
We used the hashtag #HaringeyIndieDay to let everyone know what Haringey's businesses and residents were up to.

Black Pound Day
Saturday 27 June 2020
Haringey stands in solidarity with the aims of the Black Lives Matter movement. We want to redress inequality in the borough and are committed to Community Wealth Building.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the first Black Pound Day. The movement - which launched on Saturday 27 June - seeks to uplift Black-owned enterprises and foster economic independence and empowerment in the Black community. It encourages people to spend some money with a Black-owned business on that day, and in the future.
To mark the day, some of Haringey’s Cabinet Members visited Black-owned businesses in the borough and the council highlighted some of our borough’s fantastic Black entrepreneurs.

Tuesday 22 September 2020
22 September is Business Women’s Day and to recognise the vital role that women play in the Haringey Business community, we spoke to some of them about what it’s like to be a female in business in our borough.
