Week of Peace events
Tuesday 9 September 2008
A massive Unity Day event, a community festival and street theatre are just three events planned for the Week of Peace in Haringey.
During the week, which runs from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 September, young and old are invited to take part in fun events, the highlight of which will be Unity Day on 17 September, which involves forming a human chain between Wood Green Tube and Turnpike Lane. Also on that day many organisations will showcase their work and services in Wood Green Shopping City forecourt.
The week will kick off on the Saturday with a Community Festival at Lordship Recreation Ground and Broadwater Farm Community Centre from 1pm to 5pm. There will be food, sports, a health zone, a talent show and many children's activities, all free!! Families can also take part in the Peace Picnic and enjoy the fabulous bike park - so remember to bring cycles and helmets!!
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Haringey Council cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said:
"These events will be fun and free for our community. I hope this will be one way of spreading the message that we have a peace loving and harmonious community in this borough and we want keep it that way.
"Peace Week is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and to demonstrate the determination of our communities to make a better and safer Haringey for everyone."
Along with an Art Exhibition at St. Ann's Hospital and a Peace Fair in Wood Green for secondary school children, there will be an opportunity to see how one mother declared War on Yobs when a Channel 4 film is aired in the Bernie Grant Centre in Tottenham.
Street theatre will take place on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 in Lymington Avenue, Wood Green. Also outdoors is the Crouch End Area Assembly which will take place in Priory Park all afternoon on Saturday 20 September for people to share their ideas and hear what Haringey Council is doing in the neighbourhood.
That evening a talent show will take place in the Bernie Grant Centre to be followed the next day by a small Walk of Peace with representatives from different churches in Haringey.
