Haringey disappointed at Waterstones' closure
Tuesday 14 August 2007
Haringey's regeneration chief has expressed disappointment over Waterstones' decision to shut its store in Wood Green.
The comments from Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise, Cllr Kaushika Amin, followed the closure of the bookstore in the High Road on Saturday 11 August 2007.
She said:
"We are extremely disappointed by Waterstones' decision to close its Wood Green branch, particularly given that they took over a popular Ottakar's bookstore only a couple of years ago.
"We will be writing to Waterstones to express our disappointment and asking them to explain their business strategy.
"While there are still other retailers selling books and educational materials in Wood Green, we will now be working hard to encourage another bookseller to open a bookstore in the area.
"We will also enter into discussions with other shops over the possibility of them opening an in-store coffee shop.
"I understand that another major retailer is ready to move into the unit vacated by Waterstones, and this will help Wood Green continue to build on its reputation as a high quality shopping area.
"Looking ahead, the opening of Debenhams should spur on extra investment around Shopping City, while the upcoming Heartlands development will help bring further business to the High Road."
