Council porters Angelo Parente and Vic Cox were on duty at Tottenham Town Hall in January when a man doused in petrol came in and set himself alight.

It all happened without warning, in front of pensioners waiting for an advice session. The pair stepped in immediately, calling 999, putting out the fire and helping the public to safety.

Now Vic and Angelo are up for a national bravery prize in the prestigious Council Worker of the Year Awards 2008 – and you can help them win.

The winners are decided in a public vote, online or by text.

Council leader Cllr George Meehan said:

“Vic and Angelo’s calm, professional response ensured the public were evacuated, a serious fire averted and the victim assisted as quickly as possible.

“I hope everyone in Haringey will rally behind them and get voting to give hard-working front-line staff the recognition they deserve.”
