Tree preservation orders (TPOs)

What TPO's are, how to apply for one, working on a protected tree, conservation areas and development sites, reporting unauthorised work to a protected tree.

Tree preservation orders (TPOs)

A TPO means that written consent is needed for a tree to:

  • be cut down
  • be uprooted
  • have any branches cut back
  • be damaged or destroyed, including cutting roots

Bushes and shrubs cannot be covered by a TPO.

Find out if a tree has a TPO

To find out if a tree has a TPO you can check our interactive map on this page for trees with tree preservation orders.

Protected trees on boundaries may be registered under a neighbouring address. Check for TPOs on neighbouring sites before carrying out any tree works.
