Safeguarding Adults in Haringey
Most people find it difficult to imagine that vulnerable adults and older people are victims of abuse. It is a hidden and often ignored problem in society. Haringey recognises the need to protect vulnerable people from abuse. For more information, please go to the Safeguarding Adults page.

Adult social care in Haringey provides help and support to those aged over 18 years who are vulnerable. Vulnerable people include:
- older people
- people with a physical disability, or sight or hearing impairment
- people with mental health needs
- people with learning disabilities
- people who misuse substances (such as drugs and alcohol)
- people with long-term illness
- people who need sheltered or supported housing
- carers

We offer a wide range of services, such as:
- home care and meals on wheels
- drop-in advice and support centres
- day opportunities including training and employment initiatives
- respite and residential care
- support and rehabilitation on leaving hospital or to prevent hospital admission
- help for carers

Haringey’s 2008/09 annual performance assessment of Adult Social Care Services is detailed in the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Summary Report (see the attached files section for the CQC summary report 2008-09. Overall Haringey has shown continuing improvement in performance, in both the delivery and modernisation of social care services for Adults. The findings of the APA report were presented to Cabinet on 15 December 2009, see attached files section for the report.
The council has developed a Performance Improvement Plan (PlP) to improve and monitor progress on key areas for improvement identified by CQC. See attached files section.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), formerly Commission for Social Care Inspection, carried out a service inspection in January 2009 focusing on “Independence, Well-being and Choice’ for older adults, safeguarding all adult care groups and the council’s ability to continue developments and move forward.
CQC rates council performance using four grades. These are; poor, adequate, good and excellent. CQC concluded that:
- Haringey council safeguarding of adults was adequate.
- Personalised services in Haringey council were adequate.
CQC rates council capacity to improve its performance using four grades. These are; poor, uncertain, promising, and excellent. CQC concluded that:
- Capacity to improve in Haringey council was promising.
