Role of the Mayor

The Mayor is the elected Chair of the Council and is the Civic and Ceremonial figure head for the Council.

The chain, badge and robes of office are an outward sign of this high office.

The Mayor is by statute the “first Citizen” which is an honorary title and means that the Mayor takes precedence over everyone apart from a member of the Royal Family and the Lord Lieutenant of London. The Mayor must be non-political and represent every section of the community.

Apart from the Civic and Ceremonial duties and functions that the Mayor performs for the Council, they also represent the borough at all major events and historical ceremonies in Haringey.

The Mayor has an important role to play in promoting the work of the council and supporting local community, voluntary and charitable organisations and in celebrating and recognising achievements and milestones.

About Councillor David Browne

Councillor Browne took over the chains of office from Councillor Gina Adamou at the annual meeting of the council on 21 May 2012.

David Browne  was elected to the Council to represent St Ann’s ward in May 2010. He has lived in Haringey for almost 30 years and comes from Rotherham in South Yorkshire. He was educated in Sheffield and went to university in York and Bristol.

He came to London originally to teach but moved into the media producing educational programmes. He is a journalist by profession and worked for the BBC for twenty years, where his jobs included script-writing for newsreaders and a spell as a radio 4 announcer, but most of his BBC career was as a producer of political programmes such as Today In Parliament, party political broadcasts and outside broadcasts in live TV coverage of elections. He has worked in Strasbourg and Brussels covering the European Parliament. His last job was as the editor of In Committee on Radio 4.

David took early retirement from the BBC to work as a freelance writer and built a new career specialising in travel and tourism, writing articles on tourism policy and promoting destinations around Europe and as far afield as India and the Maldives. He researches guidebooks and is the editor of the current editions of Thomas Cook guides to Malta and the Dordogne region of France.

David has also worked as a tour director for student groups visiting Europe from the USA, and as a chauffeur for Virgin Atlantic.

He came into local politics through working as a campaign organiser for the Labour Party in Harlow and has since been active in Tottenham. He has always been a trade unionist and is currently a member of both the National Union of Journalists and Equity.

His other interests, besides travel, revolve around the performing arts. His work in the creative industries includes training student film-makers and he has acted in films and on stage. David is particularly keen on championing the arts for jobs and careers.

This year the Mayor will be fundraising for Action for Kids - see the Mayor's Special Fund page
