Sandford Heritage Award 2010
In 2010 Bruce Castle Museum won a Sandford Heritage Award for Education from the prestigious Heritage Education Trust.
Bruce Castle is an excellent resource for schools and families to engage with their local heritage. A wide-ranging schools programme is complemented by frequently changing exhibitions and a lively schedule of family activities. Extensive consultation with both users and advisers ensures this small but dedicated team achieves a programme relevant to local needs and well supported by local schools, families, volunteers and adult learners.
Lead Judge: Susie Batchelor, Head of Education at Historic Royal Palaces
The museum offers a unique local history collection, an extensive archive/local studies service, and regular exhibitions.
There is also a full education programme including:

- Sessions for schools and those with special educational needs;
- Family and adult learning workshops; and
- Talks, tours and local history walks;
There is also support for an active group of volunteers and local history enthusiasts. The museum hosts events for Black History Month, Holocaust Memorial Day, International Women's Day, and local history fairs.
Last year saw the highest-ever number of visitors: 44,768 - a rise of 10 percent - as well as a 15 percent increase in organised school visits to 4,700 schoolchildren.
Cllr Dilek Dogus, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said:
Bruce Castle is the showcase for the history of Haringey and we’re delighted with this award.
